The Board of Directors

The board is the most senior decision making body within OMTP and draws its members from senior executives of the Global Operator Community. As well as setting the strategy and agenda for all OMTP activities, the board meets 8 times a years to review and agree every aspect of OMTP’s ongoing projects – from early tollgates, to final document sign off. As well as this vital governance role, with a wealth of heavyweight experience and networks, the board gives OMTP a unique perspective and impact on the industry.

David Gannon

David has been involved with OMTP since its foundation. He joined T-Mobile International in 2002 and focuses on data services and device technology strategy, specialising in solutions that require a high degree of commonality across operators.

Tim Robertson

Vice-President - Industry Relations Orange Group

Tim Robertson is responsible for Operator Alliances across the Orange Group. Before assuming this role in 2003 Tim was VP, Global Products, Marketing and Brand responsible for Group product development and marketing, content and multimedia strategy. Tim joined Orange UK in 1994 where he was General Manager Regulatory and subsequently he was a General Manager in Orange International responsible for new licence acquisition and development. He was a Board member of Connect Austria, Orange Switzerland and Orange Belgium. Prior to Orange Tim was at Coopers and Lybrand consultancy where he worked across a range of industries. Tim hold a BA in Economics and Economic History from Exeter University and an MBA from London Business School.

Alberto Ciarniello

VP Mobile Industry Relations at Telecom Italia, Mobile Business Unit

Mr. Ciarniello is involved in the road mapping, business evaluation, and development of new technologies. Previously he was with Telecom Italia Mobile in charge for planning of innovative technologies, network plan evaluation for international development initiatives, and supervision of network plans of affiliate companies. Mr. Ciarniello has been chairman of the European Radio Messaging System MoU. He has a mobile technology and network planning background.

Reinhard Kreft

Global Head of Industry Initiatives and Standardisation, Vodafone Group

Reinhard is Global Head of Industry Initiatives and Standardisation for Vodafone Group, reporting to the Global Director Technology Development. He is responsible to link the standardisation strategy to Vodafone’s mid-long term technology and commercial strategy and to focus Vodafone’s resources on key topics. In addition he oversees the development of the interworking strategy and guidelines. Reinhard holds several Board positions for Vodafone such as Board member of OMA (Open Mobile Alliance Limited), of mTLD (Mobile Top Level Domain Limited) and OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform).
Prior to taking up this role, Reinhard was CEO of Vodafone Mobile Systems, a 100 employee mobile IT solutions provider. Before joining Vodafone in 2000, Reinhard was Director and Global Head of Intranet Services within Deutsche Bank AG. Prior to Deutsche Bank, Reinhard held several positions at Nixdorf Computer AG (and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssystems AG) between 1985 and 1993. From 1990 to 1993 he was responsible for the global application platform for financial institutions.

Stein Hansen

Senior Vice President - Technology, Telenor Mobile Group

Stein started his career in Telenor R&D, and had central positions from the early beginning in the development of GSM as well as UMTS. Stein has also had a range of operational top management positions, including Technical Director of NetCom (Norway), Managing Director of Telenor Mobilnett (Norway), Mobile Planning & Implementation Director of VIAG Interkom (Germany) as well as Chief Operating Officer of DiGi (Malaysia).
Stein is one of the pioneers in the field of GSM and UMTS, and has been in the field since 1984. He was Telenor’s representative in the GSM Permanent Nucleus (France) from 1986-1988. He was also later the first ETSI chairman in the early development of UMTS from 1991-1993. Stein is also a current member of the GSM Association’s Executive Management Committee. Stein holds an M.Sc. degree in telecommunications from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, University of Trondheim.

Christian Salbaing

Managing Director - European Telecommunications, Hutchison Europe Telecommunications Limited

Chrisian Salbaing is Managing Director - European Telecommunications of Hutchison Europe Telecommunications Limited, Hutchison Whampoa Limited’s (HWL) principal European holding company for its 3G businesses in Europe. In this capacity, he has been involved since 2001 in overseeing the coordinated rollout of HWL’s 3G businesses in Europe, working closely with the “3” CEO’s and reporting directly to Canning Fok, Group Managing Director of HWL. In July 2005, Christian was appointed Deputy Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Europe Limited.
Christian is a member of the Board of Directors of Hutchison’s 3G holding and/or operating companies in the UK, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Austria, as well as a Board Director of Vidiator Technology Inc., a Seattle-based provider of multimedia trans-coding and streaming solutions.
He oversees the Group’s activities relating to branding, technology and international content procurement.
Christian also coordinates the work of the H3G European Regulatory Forum, Hutchison’s Brussels-based group dealing with European Regulatory Affairs, which includes the Heads of Regulatory Affairs at each of 3“s European operating companies.
Christian sits as the Hutchison representative on the Executive Management Committee of the GSMA . He is Chair of GSMA’s Spectrum Management Group. Christian was appointed to the ITU Telecom Board for a 3 year term in June 2005. Christian is a dual Canadian and French citizen, is bilingual in French and English and has a working practice of Italian.

Tom Keathley

Vice President - Technology and Standards, AT&T

Tom is responsible for defining the roadmap for AT&T's RF technology and overseeing the standard efforts for RF, Core Network, and Services. He had a leadership role in AT&T's launch of the first commercial HSDPA networks in 16 markets.
Previously, he was Vice President - UMTS Enterprise Program Management responsible for the nationwide launch of UMTS/HSDPA. Tom has over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry and served in a number of leadership roles in Cingular, Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, Cellular One and Southwestern Bell Telephone.
He is a graduate of the University of Missouri - Rolla, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University.

Carlos Melendo

Director of Handsets and Smart Cards - Telefónica España


He is Director of Handsets and Smart Cards and leadsthe Mobile Devices Specification and Innovation teams and the User Experience Group for Telefónica Spain. He also leads the mobile part of the Telefónica Devices Design Council, taking care of best practice sharing and common specifications for Devices within all Mobile Business Units of the Telefónica Group and Director of the Customer Insights Competence Center of Telefónica Group. In June 2008 he joined the OMTP Board on behalf of Telefónica.
Under his responsability at Telefónica he has delivered many successful projects including the alignment of mobile device specifications across the business units of Telefónica Group (targetting around 60M units / year), the launch of many Value Added Services based on SIM card technologies (Roaming Broker, Assisted Roaming, Banking Menus, etc) and the launch of remote device management services (for both consumer and enterprise
