What We Do

A not-for-profit organisation headquartered in London, OMTP is a unique forum where vendors and middleware vendors can talk directly and collectively to operators. It’s a focal point where interested parties can make sure their interests, concerns and ideas are heard. By doing so, all parties can develop a clearer understanding of their part in the final customer experience, and collaboratively define handset recommendations that will drive the industry forward.

OMTP is the organisation behind Common Charging specification which has been used as the basis for the GSMA Universal Charging Solution (now supported by CTIA and ITU). This specification and the support of the OMTP membership and others across the industry will result in the overall reduction in the number of chargers produced, but also their environmental impact.

BONDI and the Common Charging document are good examples of the type of work that OMTP can do which make a real impact on the mobile devices and the services which customers will buy in the future. Our work has and will continue to play a major role in reducing fragmentation in our industry.

Although we work closely with many industry standards bodies, the OMTP is not one itself. And we have no technological axe to grind; OMTP is strictly platform agnostic. Our commitment is to usability and to the customer, and independent of technology, this motivates all our recommendations. In fact, despite our relative youth and the industry’s notoriously long lead times, there are already handsets in the high street today that have benefited from the work of the OMTP. Not only has this been good for the end customer, but it has also translated into a direct cost saving on hardware elements within mobile devices.
