Frequently Asked Questions

We hope that the information on this website answers any questions about the organisation that you may have. However, listed below are a number of the questions we get asked most regularly.

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

  • Click here to expandWhat is the “OMTP Product Profile” process?

The OMTP Product Profile process enables component technology, platform and device manufacturers to make self-declared statements of conformance for one or more of their products against approved OMTP recommendations. These statements are maintained on a publicly accessible database.

  • Click here to expandWhat are the benefits of making an “OMTP Product Profile” statement?

OMTP network operator members have made statements of intent in terms of their adoption of OMTP recommendations. By stating their level of conformance through a Product Profile statement, vendors enable network operators to use these statements as part of their requirements process, helping them to compare and contrast competing technology, solutions and offerings. The OMTP Product Profile process also offers a range of marketing benefits, these include: * The right to use the term “OMTP Product Profile” in documentation and marketing materials for the successful component technology, platform or device. * The rights to use the “OMTP Product Profile” logo (see above) * The right to include an OMTP quote in a press release relating to a successful Product Profile statement submission.

  • Click here to expandHow long will my OMTP Product Profile statement be recognised for?

Successful statements remain valid for the lifetime of your product or until such time as the product is revised or re-released through a maintenance process.

  • Click here to expandWhat is the difference between fully compliant - inherent (FC - inherent) and fully compliant - contingent (FC - contingent)?

If compliance to requirement is fixed and inalterable and may not be broken it is ‘FC – Inherent’. If compliance is dependent upon – or may be changed as a result of – option choice or integration decisions then it is ‘FC – Contingent’.

  • Click here to expandDo I need to be an OMTP member to make a Product Profile statement?

Yes, currently only OMTP participants may make OMTP Product Profile statements. OMTP participants are Full Members, Sponsors and Advisors. However, under certain circumstances, non-member companies MAY make public Product Profile statements. (For more information, please email productprofile@omtp.org). There is no requirement to be an OMTP participant to query the publicly accessible database.

  • Click here to expandWhat happens to statements made whilst I am an OMTP member, should my OMTP membership lapse?

All statements made shall be transferred to the archive database within 6 weeks of your OMTP membership lapsing. Your statements shall remain visible in the archive database, you will not be able to change or remove these statements from the archive database. Once transferred the statements are frozen.

  • Click here to expandI find the use of the terms compliance/compliant and conformance/conformant confusing; can you explain the differences between them?

Within the OMTP Product Profile process, conformance is defined at the OMTP Requirements document level whilst compliance is defined at the individual requirement level within the document. You are compliant to an individual requirement if you meet its specific functional needs; you have a conformance profile (Product Profile) if you have achieved compliance to a critical mass of the requirements within a given OMTP Requirements document for your technology. The variance in product profiles enables comparison between technologies and technology offerings.

  • Click here to expandDoes a technology need to meet all of the requirements within a given recommendation before I can make an “OMTP Product Profile” statement?

It is recognised by OMTP, that not all technologies shall necessarily deliver all of the functional elements covered by a given OMTP Requirements document. Equally a product may not be compliant to all of the requirements within a given document and which are applicable to it, for a number of reasons. An OMTP Product Profile enables the component technology, platform and device manufacturer to state the requirements that are applicable to their solution and which they are compliant to as well as those they are not. Third parties are able to use this information to compare degrees of conformance across technology offerings.

  • Click here to expandMy technology meets all of the requirements relevant to it but for one. Can I make an “OMTP Product Profile” statement?

Yes, the process enables statements that cover conformance to a subset of the requirements relevant to your component technology, platform or device.

  • Click here to expandI want to challenge an existing “OMTP Product Profile” statement, how do I do this?

Only OMTP participants may make a challenge. OMTP participants include Full Members, Sponsors, and Advisor members. Prior to making a formal challenge you should initiate contact with the point of contact for the target technology (shown within the statement) and raise your concerns with them directly. You will need to provide evidence in support of your challenge and indicate your intention to make the challenge if the issues cannot be resolved. Your challenge will not be accepted without evidence that discussions have taken place between you and the contact point. Both parties should seek to resolve issues off-line before any formal challenge is initiated. In the event you are unable to resolve the issue(s) you may make the challenge via the challenge link on the Product Profile portal. Each statement has a challenge link. Supporting evidence and descriptions of the challenge will be required. This information will need to be supplied to the OMTP office for the challenge to be considered. All the details submitted shall be made public on the database along with the challenge flag.

  • Click here to expandCan you outline what rights I have as an OMTP member or as a non-member in terms of the process?

The matrix below outlines the access rights offered to OMTP members (including Associates, Sponsors, Advisors and full members) and non-members for the full launch process.

  • Click here to expandIf I accept a supplier's “OMTP Product Profile” statement and subsequently find the technology not to be compliant to one or more of the requirements central to it's feature set, will OMTP be liable for the inaccuracy?

No. OMTP makes no validation or judgement on the accuracy of any submission, only that the submission is complete in terms of documentation and statement responses. OMTP can accept no liability for the statements made by submitting parties. Reliance on, or use of, the Product Profile process, or acceptance of “OMTP Product Profile” statements is at the users risk. The program is not a quality validation program and as such it does not provide warranty or quality assurance for technologies components or platforms.

  • Click here to expandI want to make an “OMTP Product Profile” statement relating to my technology, however I have been told that by doing so I will need to relinquish my intellectual property rights (IPR), is this correct?

No, all IPR relating to your technology, component or platform, remain with you. The process does not involve transfer of IPR to OMTP or any other party.

  • Click here to expandI would like to make a profile statement, but some of the material is confidential in nature, what can I do?

The public submission process is the preferred mechanism of stating compliance. This gives maximum exposure to the submitting technology company and of course gives the best visibility to companies interested in such suppliers. However, we accept that some companies have sensitive information they do not wish to disclose. This may be done either at the individual requirement level, by marking the requirement approriately or by marking the entire profile private. A private profile is not uploaded onto the website, and consquently there is no risk of confidential information escaping. But in making the private statement, the company is saying that a profile does exist for interested companies to inspect on a bilateral basis.
